2nd CarbonFusion workshop
Edinburgh, Tuesday 28th November, 11am-4pm
Room 304, Crew Building, Kings Buildings, Click here for map
A 1-day workshop on implementing data assimilation in land-surface schemes
Our goal is to provide guidance to the JULES management committee on how data assimilation can be best used to test and improve the modelling, and provide uncertainty estimates on predictions in an efficient and routine manner. At the JULES launch we identified a need for the JULES community to be able to adjust the model, and then make rapid assessments of model predictions, and data-driven estimates of parameters.
With fortuitous timing, we also have a QUEST AO that is highly relevant to this goal; "Climate-Carbon Modelling, Assimilation and Prediction (CCMAP)".
The workshop will aim to generate a community response to this AO, incorporating national and international elements. Thus, topics of discussion will be related to how we would generate:
1. a toolbox of data-model comparisons to critically evaluate the modelling of processes involved in carbon-climate feedbacks (including but not limited to atmospheric CO2 and O2 concentration measurements, “flux tower” CO2 and latent heat fluxes, ocean anthropogenic carbon inventories, and remotely sensed land and ocean “greenness”);
2. a data assimilation framework to provide optimal parameter estimates and their uncertainties, based on these data;
3. a probabilitic estimate of the carbon-climate feedback based on scenario runs of the optimized model;
4. a demonstration study to evaluate the potential for a similar data assimilation system to optimize the predictive skill of a coupled climate-carbon cycle GCM.

Critical documents
QUEST AO - the full announcement of opportunity from QUEST - see especially the section "CCMAP".
CarbonFusion report - the first annual report on CarbonFusion - to provide background.
Reflex document - the regional flux experiment, Reflex, is an ongoing activity of CFusion, linked to the Global Carbon Project. This document describes the objectives and experiments of this international activity. Currently under review with the Reflex steering committee.
